Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday inspected the site of the tragic stampede near Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations.

Parameshwara clarified that the state government did not request or organise the celebratory event. “We did not ask RCB or the Karnataka Cricket Association (KCA) to organise the celebrations. They brought the team to Bengaluru on their own. The government facilitated the event since it was a proud moment for the city,” he told reporters.

Expressing deep sorrow, he confirmed that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. “The inquiry will determine if there were any administrative lapses. If anyone is found responsible, appropriate action will be taken,” Parameshwara stated.

The stampede occurred as lakhs of enthusiastic fans thronged the area to catch a glimpse of the RCB players, overwhelming the stadium’s 35,000-seat capacity. Gates were reportedly broken as the crowd surged, leading to chaos and a deadly crush.

CM Siddaramaiah, who also addressed the media, reiterated the government’s commitment to accountability and non-political handling of the tragedy. “This is a major tragedy. We have announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and will provide free treatment for the injured. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered with a 15-day deadline,” he said.

The Chief Minister also admitted the situation escalated beyond expectations. “No one anticipated a crowd of 2-3 lakh people. It was an overwhelming turnout, and unfortunately, a stampede occurred,” he added.

As investigations begin, the government faces mounting pressure to ensure accountability and prevent such tragedies in the future.
